It is also called as Great Indian Desert, extensive region of sandy desert in eastern Pakistan and north western India.

It covers an area of 44.6 million hectare, of which 27.8 hectare lies in India and the rest in Pakistan. Most of the area of the Thar Desert is situated in western Rajasthan.

In this desert, strong winds blow for four to five months in a year. During summers dust storms are common feature. The thar is derived from the name thul, the general term for the region’s sand ridges. The desert results from the dryness of the monsoon winds, which gives insufficient rain to keep the region moist. The dunes are in continual motion which varies shapes and sizes. The vegetation of desert is mostly herbaceous.
The khajri tree grows throughout the plains. A thin populated grassland supports the blackbuck, the chikara and some feathered game. In the Thar tract, there are five major breeds of cattle. The Tharparkar breed which gives highest milk, the kankre breed is also a milk producer, sheep are for both rough and medium-fine wool, and the camel is used for both transport as well as for ploughing the land and other agricultural purposes.
The grasses of a desert form the main natural resources, which provide nutritive as well as medicines used locally by the in habitants. Apart from tanks and wells, canals are the source of water throughout the desert. Crops such as wheat and cotton are grown when water is available.

India exploded its first nuclear device in Thar desert in May,1974.
