Marwar Festival in Rajasthan

The months fall in October, November and December marking the onset of colder weather. It is time for another round of celebrations. This quarter begins with the Marwar Festival held annually in Jodhpur in the month of October. Unlike the other traditional fairs, this one is specially organized in the memory of the heroes of Marwar. The period of full moon nights has always had a special significance in the Hindu calendar and Sharad Poornima is the time chosen for this festival. Its venue is the stately Umaid Bhawan Palace and the folk dancers and singers provide a glimpse of the music of Marwar.

The Marwar festival is followed on the tenth day of Kartik by Dussehra. Dedicated to the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, festivities include the enacting of Ramleela, a dance drama that retells the legendary battle between the two. Effigies of Ravana are burnt on the tenth day symbolizing the victory og good over evil. Dussehra is parallel to a festival dedicated to Goddess Durga. The Navratri, or nine nights, commemorate the victory of the goddess over the demons.
